STARS FAQs

Here are some of the questions we are asked regarding the STARS program:

  1. Why do kids need tutors?
  2. How do I get started?
  3. What is required of me?
  4. What else can I do besides tutor?
  1. Why do kids need tutors?

Most of our students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken at home. As a result, it is difficult for the students to get homework assistance at home.

  2. How do I get started?

Complete & submit the online application.

  3. What is required of me?

We ask tutors to commit to coming for one hour (from 5:30-6:30) each week on the same day each week.
Since the students become attached to their tutor & it’s important for successful tutoring, we also ask that you commit to tutoring for one full school year.
We provide monthly trainings for tutors & ask that you attend each month to equip you to be the best tutor possible.

  4. What else can I do besides tutor?

    - You can be an Activity Assistant. You can come earlier in the program day and help lead the various enrichment components.
    - You can be a Group Reading Leader.
    - You can mentor.
